Cyanotech® Corporation Joins the Algae Biomass Organization as the Newest Gold-Level Member

KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII (September 12, 2018) — Cyanotech® Corporation, (Nasdaq Capital Market: CYAN), a world leader in microalgae-based, high-value nutrition and health products, is proud to announce that it has joined the Algae Biomass Organization (ABO) as its newest Gold-Level member. ABO is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the development of viable commercial markets for renewable and sustainable commodities derived from algae.

“Cyanotech was one of the first, large scale commercial algae facilities in the US. Starting off as a small, 5-acre farm in 1984, we have since grown into a 90 acre, fully vertical-integrated production facility.  We are expanding to 96 acres with the acquisition of a six-acre production and research facility from Cellana LLC.  This facility, to be renamed as the Cyanotech Innovation Center, will accelerate our efforts to develop new technologies and production systems.  Cyanotech helped to pioneer the concept of microalgae as a supplement and successfully built the consumer market for microalgae products, Arthrospira platensis and Haematococcus pluvialis,” said Mawae Morton, Chief Executive Officer of Cyanotech Corporation. “The knowledge that we have acquired in the production and marketing of algae over the last 30 years we feel will be a valuable addition to help support ABO’s campaign to advance other algae-based products to the market.”

Cyanotech produces microalgae ingredients, spirulina and astaxanthin, which are used in their popular nutritional supplements, Hawaiian Spirulina® and BioAstin® Hawaiian Astaxanthin®. Besides the health benefits, Cyanotech contributes many of its products success to the amount of time and resources they spend on educating the consumer market about microalgae.

“We really value educating consumers about the health benefits and sustainability of microalgae and we see microalgae innovation and consumption continuing to grow and expand into new sectors in the future. Because of this, Cyanotech is excited to start building a relationship with ABO as the world-wide market for algae and other nutritional ingredients continues to grow,” added Morton.

Cyanotech was founded in 1984 by Dr. Cysewski, who chose the pristine Kona Coast of Hawaii due to the pure, unpolluted, clean growing location and access to deep ocean water from a depth of 2000 feet. The facility is located in a BioSecure zone, free of all pesticides and herbicides.
